6 Reasons to Buy An AR/MSR

6 Reasons to Buy An AR/MSR. A lot of traditional hunters – rifle and shotgun shooters, mostly – do not own an AR/MSR and have never considered purchasing one. With full-time jobs and families to raise, the average hunter is a weekend warrior who takes a couple hours to sight in his rifle before opening day then sits stand a handful of times before the season closes. Then he (hopefully) oils his rifle and places it back in the safe until next year.

On the other hand, we know a lot of guys love shooting. So if you fall into this latter category, then this article will hopefully give you another reason or two to justify to the spouse why you own so many rifles or need another one. Looking beyond the obvious point of self defense (these rifles are great for self defense, this we know), here are several reasons to add one or more to your collection. To anyone considering an AR/MSR, there’s never a better time than now to make that purchase.

Become a Better Shooter

Ammo for the AR/MSR platform is relatively inexpensive. This makes it a good alternative to the .22 where you’ll get more practice with a high-powered rifle. You’ll also want to shoot more if you’re not paying $30 a box for a 20 rounds of .30-06 shells. Depending on what configuration you have, you can shoot long distance with these rifles as you would with your deer rifle. And with a proper riflescope, keeping it in the 10 range will become almost second nature.

Easily Configurable

ARs allow you to easily switch your setups and caliber whereas with many traditional rifles you’re buying the whole shebang and that’s it. “I have a few configurations that go from 300blk subsonic suppressed, to a standard AR prepped gun, to a distance gun,” said Matt Robinson, a firearms engineer with Remington Arms. “It’s quick and easy to change setups that allow you to plink, hunt or shoot long distances with very little cost.”

The AR platform is easily configurable to shoot long distances, plink or hunt.

Hunting 6 Reasons to Buy An AR/MSR

Both the AR-15 and AR-10 are perfect hunting rifles. If the .223 is the smallest caliber you can hunt big game with in your state, then the AR-15 is a great option for hunters of any size or experience. The bigger AR-10 in .308 is a long-favored caliber by many veteran whitetail hunters.

Teaching Kids and Women

These light-kicking rifles give the beginning or smaller-bodied shooter a taste of fun. Women are the fastest growing demographic in shooting thanks to a few organizations promoting their growth. From learning to load a clip to cleaning a rifle, the AR allows you to do it all.

The “Farm Truck Rifle”

ARs are great knockaround rifles. If you’re out feeding cattle on the farm and see a coyote, the AR can quickly be loaded and fired. The narrow width of these rifles allows you to keep it in a secure spot in the backseat.

Getting Into Competitive Shooting

The AR-15 is an excellent choice for competitive shooting. And 3-gun competition is one of the fastest growing sports in America. The light-kicking rifle can take a beating and parts are rather easy to come by. “They are really pretty modular and parts are everywhere so they are quick and cheap to repair when the need arises,” said Matt.
